More than 200 individuals with diabetes were injured when their insulin pumps experienced unexpected shutdowns due to a problem with a connected mobile app, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. The t:connect Apple iOS app (Version 2.7) used with the t:slim X2 insulin pump has been recalled due to a software issue. This issue causes the app to crash and relaunch, draining the pump battery and leading to premature shutdown and suspension of insulin delivery. The FDA warned that this could result in serious health complications, but no deaths have been reported. The app was distributed between February 12 and March 13, with over 85,000 units recalled. Tandem Diabetes Care Inc. has sent affected customers a device correction letter, advising them to update the app to version 2.7.1 or later and to monitor the pump’s battery level.
