At-home brain stimulation relieves symptoms of depression, study finds
New Headset Offers Hope for Depression Treatment #
A new device that stimulates the brain with the equivalent energy of a 9-volt battery shows promise in alleviating depression symptoms. During a 10-week trial, 87 adults with moderate depression using an active headset experienced more significant improvement than those using a placebo device, with remission rates of 45% versus 22%.
The device is designed to adjust brain activity in two regions, targeting imbalances seen in depression. Unlike comparable devices, it focuses specifically on treating depressive symptoms. It is already available in several countries and is awaiting approval in the United States.
Participants like a Houston resident reported increased motivation and the ability to manage daily tasks better. The study’s results indicate the potential for at-home treatment, offering an alternative or complementary approach to medication. The effects’ duration is still under review, but the device seems safe, albeit with some usage restrictions for specific conditions and demographics.
